About
Born February 12, 1990 in Philadelphia, PA. Raised mostly in upstate NY. I spent most of my time outdoors exploring, studying everything, and trying to catch animals I perhaps shouldn’t have. I started exploring photography somewhat by accident at age 14, playing with my parents’ digital point-and-shoot taking long walks. My biggest struggle at that point was the act of framing—I wanted to take it all in. Since then I’ve learned to focus, but that memory is still telling. I’ve always been too curious for my own good. For one reason or another, making photographs helps me to better absorb and understand the world around me, and how I relate to it. It also gives me immense happiness and enjoyment.
I’ve fiddled with (or even committed to) other artistic pursuits in the past, including dance, music, painting, and sculpture—all of which I would like to return to in some form or another. However, I won’t be surprised if photography is something I never drop.
I work primarily with film, and operate my own B&W darkroom. I plan on learning to process and print color film myself as well, in the future, in addition to exploring more mixed-media work.
Any inquiries regarding collaboration or commissioned work should be sent to alaruephoto at gmail dot com.
I live and work in San Francisco, and am available throughout the Bay Area for a variety of assignments.
